If you want to take a math, science or English course at a California community college next fall, you may be in for some disappointment. Students in this state are more than twice as likely as those in other states to be shut out of the community college courses they need, according to a national survey. Classes were so packed that 47% of students said they were not able to enroll in one or more needed courses.

Part of this is because California has unusually low tuition, and the state is built on easy access to college. And with 2.7 million students, California's community college system is the nation's largest. Despite the low tuition rates, in-state students report having more financial pressures than in other states, with many dropping courses because of it.

Oak Park Elementary District 97, Chicago, Superintendent Al Roberts has set a goal of having all students graduate from the middle schools already bilingual, thanks to their foreign language program.
After voters approved a tax increase in April, Oak Park District 97 School officials are trying to make good on promises made to the public – specifically the retention of teachers, a more robust foreign language program, and technology and facility improvements
.
The board has already rehired most teachers and staff and has approved new technology purchases, so administrators are now moving to foreign language as the next step.
"The whole nature of the brain is different from early language acquisition," said Dawn Deaton, who heads the foreign language school program. "
Foreign language school education started as a pilot program in 1994 at only one school. As the years went by, more schools were added and the program was installed at all schools in 2001.

The Higher Education Ministry in Malaysia has called on universities in that country to put more importance on English courses in order to enhance their graduates' employment prospects. This has angered some Malaysian students, however, who have taken it as a move to sideline Bahasa Malaysian.

The students have submitted a memorandum to the Academy of Malay Studies (AMS) vice-chancellor demanding an apology for his recent speech in which he criticized the state of English instruction at local universities, particularly at AMS. As it turns out, AMS students have the lowest graduate employment rate in comparison with all other schools, as measured at six months after graduation. Some students have posted nasty comments on YouTube about the vice-chancellor for his comments, calling him biadap (recalcitrant) and khianat (traitor). But he is sticking to his guns, prepared to clarify his stance on the matter but not to apologize.
